Abstract

Information technologies offer significant opportunities for communication, information and entertainment. However, the use of mobile and multimedia devices is not accessible to the whole population. In the current context of overall ageing of the population and increasing prevalence of disabilities, information and communications technology are essential in promoting an active and quality ageing. The aim of this paper is to examine patterns of use and barriers to Internet access by the population aged 65 years and over in Spain, with special attention to people with disabilities. In order to address these topics, microdata from the Social Integration and Health Survey developed by the National Statistic Institute in 2012 have been used. The results indicate the low penetration of Internet by this population group and access barriers related to lack of training and economic factors.
