Abstract

The aging of persons has not evolved in the same way in rural areas than in urban areas and it affects, in turn, to different access to leisure opportunities for them. Leisure of older adults in Spain has not yet been sufficiently discussed from the rural/urban perspective. This article analyzes the influence of environment on the importance attributed to leisure, the total repertoire of activities and non-participation. It compares the rural ad the urban environments and their influence on older people. Itis based on quantitative methodology, using a survey. The questionnaire was administered in March 2014 to a representative sample of 1239 Spanish residents between 65 and 74. The hypothesis was that environment promotes different ways of developing leisure in terms of accessing services and participating, and it is concluded that rural population faces more difficulties to participate.
